L’EBRAISMO E IL CRINALE DEMOCRATICO

Davide Assael

The Judaism was one of the sources that nurtured the European and Western universalism. The way in which the universal ideals are declined, however, is quite different. May be because motivated by its proverbial realism, the Jewish ethics preserves insuperable political structures such as identity and hierarchy, which would seem to oppose with any universalist project. Its political vision is presented as an oxymoron, in which universal and particular dimensions coexist. This is an approach that we find unchanged in the modern Israel, which, according to the 1948 Independence Charter, presents itself at the same time as a Jewish and a democratic state.
