LA CRISI DEL PRINCIPIO DEMOCRATICO DELLA UGUAGLIANZA

Luigi Ferrajoli

The principle of equality is a fundamental pillar of true democracy. Such principle ensures equal rights not only in the individual sphere, protecting personal freedom and dignity, but also in relation to the social dimension. However, the principle of equality currently finds itself in a crisis due to the spread of discriminative attitudes, the increase of wealth inequality, and the dismantling of labour provisions. The symptoms of such crisis are particularly evident in Italy, where highly restrictive immigration laws, more than two decades of economic policies worsening wealth inequality, and the continuous dissolution of basic workers’ rights are severely endangering the principle of equality – and, in turn, the entire democratic system. In order to restore the true spirit of western democracies, the principle of equality must once again become the centre of our political agenda.
