UNE ETUDE SUR LA CONCEPTION DE L’IDENTITE PERSONNELLE CHEZ PAUL RICOEUR
Maria Cristina Clorinda Vendra
The matter of personal identity through time, e.g. the persistence question, concerns since ancient times the philosophical speculation. My paper seeks to analyze this problem following Paul Ricœur ’s work. First, my research examines the place of his narrative theory within the hermeneutics of the self. Personal identity rests in the distinction between identity as sameness (idem) and identity as selfhood (ipse). Narrative identity, related to the temporality of the self, is conceived as the dialectic result between identity-idem and identity-ipse, between two different forms of identity integrated by the permanence in time. Finally, personal identity is ontologically relational, opened to the alterity of the other, combining the present, past, and future.
