THINKING WITH SPINOZA ABOUT UNCERTAINTY TODAY
Preliminary Reflections on Uncertainty in Spinoza’s Political and Social Thought
Alfonso R. Vergaray
This essay examines how Baruch Spinoza’s thought addresses contemporary interest in social and political uncertainty. It introduces readers to three areas in Spinoza’s thought, (1) the connection between ignorance and uncertainty, (2) uncertainty as a form of governance, and it concludes examining the (3) hope driven uncertainties in a democracy. Ultimately, it hopes to show that Spinoza’s insights in these areas are an indispensable starting point for reflecting on uncertainty today.
